LOG SCALER / TIMBER SCALER / WEIGHMASTER

At PWT, Log Scalers / Timber Scalers are responsible for weighing log trucks, measuring government and company quality scale samples, and enforcing company/provincial log specifications. Log Scalers / Timber Scalers enjoy a balanced mix of field scaling and stratifying.

This is an hourly position with the United Steelworkers union offering competitive wage rates and a comprehensive Health and Welfare Plan.

Required Certifications:
Valid Log Scaling and Weighmaster License

Duties & Responsibilities:
Perform all duties in compliance with safety and environmental regulations
Monthly inventory of log yard
Ensure accurate weighing and direction of log trucks for unloading
Ensure compliance with provincial and company rules and regulations in the log yard
Inspect incoming logs and stratify to the government sampling plan
Inspect incoming logs to ensure compliance with PWT log quality standards, and coordinate with the Forest Resources Division when standards are not met
Coordinate work with off-loaders and truck drivers to ensure accurate inventory records are maintained
Prepare daily and weekly reports
Ensure the accuracy of data entered
Scale government samples as well as the company’s quality samples
Maintain the log yard in an organized manner to ensure optimum inventory capacity
Operate assigned equipment as needed to maintain the log yard
General cleaning and maintenance of scale, scale house, and log yard
Perform other duties as necessary

Required Qualifications and Abilities:
Previous experience working as a Log Scaler / Weighmaster
Proven experience with scale systems, record keeping, and log quality identification
Strong mathematical skills and computer literacy
Effective verbal and written communication skills
Strong aptitude for numbers and attention to detail
Ability to work independently or in a group, always exercising sound judgment
Ability to operate small and heavy equipment as needed
Ability to operate a computer and supporting software
Thorough knowledge of safety and environmental regulations
Maintain adequate physical fitness and have the ability to walk on uneven ground and site locations
Highly motivated self-starter with a positive attitude and proven safety record

Work Environment:
Work at the Scale Office and in an outdoor environment.

Wage Rate:
This position starts at $38.52/hour and a higher rate may be offered commensurate with experience.
